2026 Week 6 CIAA Friday Night Matchup: Johnson C. Smith University
vs
Shaw University

It was a special Friday Night Lights matchup in the CIAA between Johnson C. Smith University and Shaw University at Irwin Belk Complex in Charlotte, NC. JCSU came into the matchup undefeated in conference play at 3-0 and Shaw came in with a .500 record at 2-2. Both Teams had a solid start to the season and remain in the hunt for a chance to get to Durham depending on how the rest of the conference shakes out.

There had been talks earlier in the season of JCSU's offense not looking as strong as expected but let me tell you they left no doubts this past Friday. The golden Bulls coming off of a 51-0 victory over Bluefield State last Saturday opened up the game scoring 28 unanswered points. RB #1 Fabian Duncan took a screen pass from #11 Damien Mazil 45 yards to the house. Duncan would have the second score of the night for JCSU, running it in this time from 2 yards out. Mazil would score the next two TDS for the Golden Bulls 1st through the air with a TD pass to #7 Kamarro Duncan for 24 yards. Then on the ground for an 8-yard TD at the end of the half bringing the score to 28-0 at halftime.

Picking up where they left off in the 1st half, JCSU's Mazil would hit WR #o Reginald Daniel for 57-yard TD pass to bring the score to 35-0. Shaw however would answer right back with a 23-yard TD from RB #5 Fabian Diggs to bring the score to 35-6. That score would be the 1st score that JCSU's defense had allowed in the past 2 games. The Golden Bulls would answer right back with Mazil passing for his final TD of the night to WR #5 Brian Lane for a 13-yard TD.

JCSU would finish of the scoring with a 15-yard TD pass from #4 Parker McQuarrie to #23 Christian Rutledge. The final score ended up being 49-6 JCSU over Shaw and Damien Mazil having a standout performance with 5 total TDS and 301 passing Yards! The race to see who will make the CIAA championship game is a tight one between JCSU, Virginia State, and Virginia Union as they are all undefeated in conference play.

2026 Week 2 Undefeated Matchup:
Valdosta State University
vs
Fayetteville State University

Division 2 powerhouse Valdosta State University Traveled down to Fayetteville State University for an early season matchup. Both teams started the season 2-0 as they both had Week 0 matchups. Fayetteville State has been consistently one of the great teams across all of D2 football over the past decade and have been in the ruining for CIAA conference championships every year.

It was an early 11am start to this game as the game was moved up for weather concerns. Fayetteville State had a great turn out in spite of this and the energy in Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium was live through all 4 quarters!

Valdosta State showed early why they are deserving of their #10 ranking as #3 Curtis Janvier scoops and scores the fumble recovery for the blazers early in the 1st quarter. Fayetteville State but together a strong drive shortly after but could only come away with 3 points. Valdosta State would have a solid 11 play, 75-yard drive of their own ultimately cashing in with a rushing TD from #4 Shawn Paschall. Early in the 2nd quarter VSU would score again this time with #7 Champ Harris connecting with #26 Kenai Grier for a 48-yard TD, bringing the score to 21-3 at the half.

Fayetteville State battled all game long and looked to swing momentum in their favor by scoring the 1st TD of the second half with QB #3 Jamir Dukes finding star WR #1 Marcus Fleming for a 27-yard TD. Valdosta State stayed composed and showed what makes them so great by striking right back. QB Champ Harris scores again, but this time on the ground looking like a young Mike Vick with tat #7 in the red and black for the blazers. The Blazers would add an FG to bring the score to 31-9 heading into the 4th quarter.

Valdosta State's defense came away with two big time INTs from #28 Jabari McMillan and closed the game how they started with a 2nd fumble recovery in the 4th from #57 Sergio Mason. Valdosta State would win the game 38-9 moving to 3-0! Although Fayetteville State loss their 1st game of the season, they look to be in the running for another CIAA championship.

2026 Week 1 Soup Bowl Recap:
Greensboro College
vs
Guilford College

Arguably the purest form of college football can be found at the Division III level. We traveled down to Greensboro, NC for the 25th installment of the Soup Bowl. Coming into this game Guilford college has the series lead at 15-9 but Greensboro College won last years matchup.

Intensity was high as you could imagine with both teams looking to start the season strong. Greensboro College struck first with #2 Camron Torrence-Kelly running it in for a pride TD! The Pride followed that score up with #1  Cameron Turner connecting with #3 KJ Brown bringing the score to 13-0 in the 1st Quarter.

Although rattled, Guilford college struck at the end of the first with an electrifying TD run from #22 Maurice Andrews cutting the lead down to 6 points. It looked like the Quakers started to build momentum but the Pride scored 28 unanswered points in the second half. QB Cameron Turner found WR #0 Sincere McIntyre for not 1 but 2 TDS in the air. RB Camron Torrence-Kelly added his 2nd rushing TD on the day. Following Torrence-Kelly's 2nd TD, QB Cameron Turner ran it in as well bringing his total TD's to 4. And to close it out #11 Austin Seabrook score the final touchdown to bring the final score to 48-7 for the Pride (1-0) over the Quakers (0-1)!

Greensboro College looked solid on all three units; Offense, Defense, and special teams. Overall, It was a great atmosphere at Pride field and I would recommend taking the trip down to Greensboro to check out a game. One of the most intimate settings I have been to since covering college football.
